Southern Luberon Villages
First up is a gentle tour of the southern luberon villages. Departing Lourmarin, keeping the undulating Luberon hills to your left you will arrive after 5 km at Vaugines.
This quintissentially Provencal village is worth stopping at and exploring. The church sitting at the end of an avenue of plane trees, next to a trickling stream is picture postcard perfect. After Vaugines, head another 5 km on to Cucuron. The water basin around which the weekly market takes place on Tuesdays is one of the sights of Provence. Pause for a coffee in one of the many cafes. Explore. Consider a lazy lunch, or head on another 5 km towards Ansouis. From the summit of this hilltop town their are wonderful views out across the Luberon. It’s a good spot for lunch. Head back towards Lourmarin, perhaps stopping at Domaine de La Cavale for a wine tasting before handing the bikes back.
Luberon Hill Villages
The locals call the Luberon a corner of paradise. It’s not hard to understand why: – there are countless picturesque villages; numerous vineyards producing sumptuous wines; olive groves that stretch for miles; cherry orchards which produce snow storms of blossom in Spring and rolling mountains stretching away towards the Alps.
The northern Luberon offers the possibility to explore numerous famous villages. We will discuss different possible itineraries with you on your arrival. We recommend in particular: Roussillon, famed for its red soil. Local legend has it that a jilted lover threw herself from a cliff and her blood stained the soil for miles around; and Gordes, which for decades has been an ultra-chic retreat for wealthy Parisian families and French celebrities.
And for a wine tasting Domaine de La Citadelle outside Menerbes . The vineyard has a famous corkscrew museum and medicinal herb garden which are also interesting to visit.
Southern Luberon Day 2
Heading west from Lourmarin, the e-bike tour takes a route along the southern slopes of the Luberon mountains, offering stunning views south towards Aix and Mont St Victoire. Villages such as Puget, Lauris and Merindol offer the perfect place to stop for lunch and or a drink. There are numerous vineyards at which to stop for a wine tasting including Chateau Verrarie, where a picnic in the vines can be organised.
Departure day
There’s a perfect opportunity to do something last minute shopping before heading home (particularly if you are deparing on Friday – market day)
Our base the village of Lourmarin is nicknamed the “St Tropez of inland Provence”
All our groups are based in the village of Lourmarin at the 4-star Bastide du Lourmarin Hotel. The Hotel has a swimming pool and spa, and is conveniently located a 1 minute walk from the center of the village. Guests can also choose the historic Moulin de Lourmarin hotel right in the heart of Lourmarin. A small supplement will be charged
Lourmarin is classed as one of France’s most beautiful villages. It is filled with shops, cafes, restaurants and art galleries and is an enchanting place to spend time. The village has an extensive literary heritage claiming Albert Camus, Henri Bosco and Peter Mayle as past residents. It is located in the Luberon Regional Nature Park, in the heart of Provence, 30 minutes north of Aix en Provence. Little known outside France, Lourmarin is beloved by the famously hard to please Parisians. Mention the name of the village to a Parisian and watch a wide smile spread across their face as they confess: “J’adore Lourmarin”.
One of the reasons to choose our tour is that you will spend 4 nights in the village soaking up its unique atmosphere. Each night you will be able to choose a different restaurant to suit your mood. Please see the photo tab above for more images of Lourmarin.
Tour Reviews
My wife and I recently did a 4 day trip through southern France in the Luberon area with Jamie. He set up everything for us: Train transfers to the hotel, accommodations, e-bike rentals, suggestions for restaurants and wineries. It was all wonderful! Everything went so smooth and the hotels were very nice. We even met Jamie for an introduction cocktail in Lourmarin where he lives. I would highly recommend going with Jamie!!
